VAN DIEMEN'S LAND

In the early 19th century, Van Diemen's Land -- today's Australian state of Tasmania -- was a dreaded penal settlement regarded as the end of the world. Its entrance, Macquarie Harbour, was aptly named "Hell's Gates" by the prisoners unlucky to be sent there. In 1822, Alexander Pearce and seven fellow convicts of English, Irish and Scottish descent, attempt the impossible in a fateful bid for freedom. They flee a labour camp only to find the wilds of Tasmania a much crueller reality. As the provisions run out and hunger takes over, first national allegiances and then selfish impulses begin to fracture the group -- with horrifying consequences...

Jonathan auf der Heide

Born in Tasmania, Australia, Jonathan auf der Heide developed an early ambition to film the shocking story of Alexander Pearce. He acquired the skills by attending the VCA School of Film and Television at Melbourne University, and worked as assistant editor on Paul Cox's SALVATION. He has directed several shorts: Incase (2001), Skeletons (2005), Gristle (2005), Sailor Boy (2006), Four Legs in the Morning (2006), Hell's Gates (2007).
