In the past, it was believed that the deaf were under the influence of evil spirits, and they were locked up in mental institutions along with the "insane". They were forbidden to communicate through sign language and they were subject to all sorts of surgery, every sterilization. Then attitudes changed and their differences were accepted and respected. This film examines the relationship to language, sound, silence and movement by normal (hearing) children born to deaf parents. How do they reconcile deaf culture with "hearing" culture? How do they deal with exclusion and with belonging to two very distinct worlds?
