A version of retirement unlike anything seen in the West – elderly ravers cutting loose to pounding techno, mass maraca troupes prancing in unison… The antics of China’s urban retirees are fascinating. But in a place where social harmony and self-censorship reign supreme, this frenzy of eccentricity and self-proclaimed happiness builds to an unsettling crescendo. The film avoids a journalistic wrapping up of the social, political and environmental realities of China, instead letting the issues bubble and seethe beneath an onslaught of colour and humanity.
Peter O’Donoghue is an editor, director and writer based in Australia. He has been working in film and TV since 2005 on projects in Australia, New Zealand, China, the US and the UK. He has also written and directed two short dramas, Hear No Evil (2008), and Super Man (2013).
