Shankaran, a young Dalit man, befriends an American lepidopterist, for whom he helps catch butterflies, including the rare "Papilio Buddha". Shankaran’s father is a communist who feels let down by the failure to achieve equal rights. Meanwhile, Manju, a strong-minded woman who has a job as a rickshaw driver, struggles to avoid prejudice in a male-dominated career. When Manju hits a lecherous union leader, and Shankaran is arrested for illegally catching butterflies, the events politicize and radicalize the community and lead to acts of rebellion.
Indian poet and filmmaker Jayan Cherian studied film in New York and has made numerous shorts and documentaries, among them: Tandava the Dance of Dissolution (2006), Hid-entity (2007), Silence of the Tumult (2007), Tree of Life (2007), Holy Mass (2007), Capturing the Signs of God (2008), Soul of Solomon (2098), Love in the Time of Foreclosure (2009), Shape of the Shapeless (2010).
