Yiddish was the main spoken and literary language of northern European Jews from France to Russia for several hundred years but a majority of its speakers were annihilated during the Holocaust. This film documents the resilience of Yiddish language and culture, especially via theatre and performance art. Efforts to maintain the viability of Yiddish are reflected in the stories of three individuals -- Yiddish performers and activists -- representing three generations of Yiddish speakers: Shmuel Atzmon of Israel, Bryna Wasserman of Montreal and New York and Milena Kartowsky of Paris.
Hungarian-born Montreal-based filmmaker Abigail Hirsch worked many years as a social worker in the fields of addiction, immigration, mental health and physical rehabilitation before launching Ask Abigail Productions in May of 2009. Among her previous credits: Qui est tu? (2010), about a class of autistic adolescents, and Itzik Manger’s Megillah, Purim Spiel (2012).
