Two dozen Chinese features will be shown at this year’s Montreal World Film Festival, it was announced. Among this number, four films will be shown in the Official Competition and the First Films Competition (titles to be announced later), and Chinese cinema will be represented in the documentary and short films sections. As well, four films will be shown in a special Hangzhou Film Week, highlighting films from that city..

Then there is the Special Chinese Film Festival within the MWFF, comprising 13 titles. “It is thanks to Chinese cinema that I discovered a great and unique civilization,” declared MWFF president Serge Losique. Tong Gang, Chinese deputy minister in charge of press, publication, radio, film amd television, conveyed “in the name of the cinema community, his respect and gratitude both to the MWFF and to Mr. Losique, for their great support of Chinese cinema” over four decades.

A large delegation of Chinese dignitaries will be in attendance in Montreal, among them Liu Yifei, an icon of the Chinese cinema.

In the course of the Festival and its attendant Market, many Chinese and Canadian film professionals will be able to meet and discuss co-production between the two countries. A generous patron of the cinema, Gold Finance (Canada) Group, is supporting the Chinese participation at MWFF.

The 40th Montreal World Film Festival will take place August 25 to September 5.
