1868, the fourth year of the Keiou era. The Tokugawa Shogunate is ending, after a period of dominance that continued for 300 years. Goku suddenly breaks off his marriage engagement with the younger sister of Teijirou. Teijirou is outraged when he learns of this, and heads off in pursuit of Goku, until they run into their old childhood friend, Masanosuke. When Goku discovers that Masanosuke has been driven out of his family home, Goku encourages him to join their Shougitai resistance movement. When these three lifelong friends are reunited, their destinies are propelled into sharply different directions... GASSOH, based on the celebrated “manga” by the late Hinako Sugiura, depicts the final resistance to the dismantling of the Togugawa Shogunate at the end of the Edo period. Her work was serialized in the legendary comic magazine Manga Garo. This is its live-action adaptation.

Born in Kyoto in 1985, Tatsuo Kobayashi made his auspicious directorial debut in 2006 with District, winner of top prize at the Kyoto International Student Film & Video Festival. His debut feature, the self-produced COUNTRY GIRL (2010), was shown on both sides of the Atlantic. He followed that with another short, Secret Sharer, in 2012.
