Close to 40,000 people have lost their lives to communal violence and insurgency over the past 35 years in the northeast regions of India, many of the victims entirely innocent bystanders. They are simply poor adivasis, villagers busy tilling land for their precarious survival. Yet they are the ones who have to pay the maximum price. Raimali, a young rape victim, knows this firsthand. As she lies in an abandoned house, she recalls how separatist violence has marked her life, that of her lover and their families, contrasting its disruption with indigenous folklore and the immutability of the Assamese landscape.

Born in Assam, India, Manju Borah made her feature directorial debut in 1999 with A SCAM IN VERSE, and has since followed with half a dozen more, winning several prizes along the way. Selected filmography: ANYA EK YATRA (2001), A TALE TOLD THOUSAND TIMES (2003), SHAME (2003), THE SAVIOUR (2006), MA (2008), A SILENT WAY (2011).
