A HANDFUL OF GRASS / UNE POIGN�E D'HERBE
Kendal, a 10-year-old boy from a small, impoverished village in Kurdistan, is brought to live in Germany by his uncle. Unknown to his parents, Kendal is to be used as a runner by Salim, a Kurdish drug dealer: since he is a minor, he can't be arrested. Kendal and his uncle have scarcely arrived in Hamburg when his uncle is arrested. Heilkamp, a cab driver and ex-cop, picks up Kendal and begins to look after him. But since he is not allowed to keep the boy, Kendal is sent to stay in a children's foster home. His uncle finds him and puts him to work for Salim. Kendal quickly becomes a hardened street urchin. In the children's home Kendal is hassled by the older boys and when life becomes too difficult he seeks refuge with the only person who has treated him well in Germany -- Heilkamp. Gradually a deeper friendship develops between the sullen cabbie and the lonely boy. There is, however, something in Heilkamp's past which keeps coming between them. Heilkamp is faced with choosing between the world of drug dealers, his own people and a friend who, it seems, can never be his friend. Either way, he loses...
