On the last day of the year a young soldier who is on leave to return to his parents is ordered to escort a juvenile delinquent from a remote station in Sarakhs, in Khorasan province, to a reformatory school in Tehran. The relationship between the two is tense and wary. Each of them is on his guard. The young delinquent, whom the soldier's parents mistake for the commander's son, is greeted by them with great hospitality; he is treated like a member of the family. A stolen necklace, a few lies and some well-kept secrets allow the young boy to recover some of his lost dignity. A relationship grows between the young boy and his guardian. (The story is loosely inspired by Gianni Amelio's STOLEN CHILDREN, 1992.) I was worried about how this film would be received but after the first test screening my anxieties were laid to rest -- I managed to satisfy a diverse audience with a realistic, simple story told in a spare style and played by a group of non-professionals. -- Seyyed Reza Mir-Karimi |
