<  WESTRAY   Canada 2001 / Video / Color / 80 min. On May 8, 1992, twenty-six men were killed in an explosion at the Westray coal mine in Nova Scotia. Through the use of personal stories and dramatic recreation, WESTRAY tells the stories of six people -- three miners and three widows -- whose lives were forever changed by the disaster. It recreates the events that lured these six people to Westray, takes them through the horrifying days of the explosion and then portrays the never-before-told events that continued to affect their lives in the years following the disaster. The film is a compelling portrait of working men and their wives who knew Westray wasn't safe, but who had no option but to remain at the mine, and of a company so obsessed with making its venture succeed that it violated the most basic rules of safe coal mining. He worked as a freelance cameraman for the National Film Board of Canada from 1973 until 1977, when he joined the staff and directed his first feature, I'LL GO AGAIN.
