Three women from different backgrounds, a midwife, a mother and an obstetrician are linked by a mysterious pregnancy. Meg, the midwife who practises illegally in rural areas of West Coast Canada, is visited by strange dreams when she takes on a new client. Artist Nicole, a feisty French-Canadian mother-to-be scarred by past trauma at the hands of modern medicine, is adamant about having her upcoming birth at home. Dr. Sara, a compassionate European obstetrician, warns of dangerous complications. When Nicole's vulnerability becomes apparent in hospital, all three women ask themselves whether one woman's choice is worth the chance that her babies may die. As the risk to Meg's career escalates over the mother's determination to have her child at home, Meg's dreams are haunted by images of another life. On the night of the birth, the mother's choice, Dr. Sara's secret and Meg's dreams collide.
