Together John and Angela are guided by their friendship and by the native Indian spirituality that binds John's people together. As they mature into adolescence, their friendship strengthens. John's feelings for Angela intensify into love, but it remains unrequited. Angela, instead, turns toward T.J., whom she sees as a ticket out of their small town. Sensing something sinister in T.J.'s relationship with Angela, John tries to protect her. His worst fears come true one tragic night when he rescues her from a shocking act of betrayal.
