Adam Bergschmidt is in the prime of life. He is turning sixty and he lives in paradise in the lake district of Mecklenburg-Pomerania. This is where Adam grows his vegetables, talks to the trees and waters his flowers with lake water. He relishes the morning air and the grass under his bare feet. Here he finds the peace to write his symphonies. Adam decides to celebrate his 60th birthday with his nearest and dearest: his seven great loves, the seven most important women in his life. These naturally include his young wife Eva, but also Berenice and the actress Lulu, to whom he was also once married. Then there's Lilith and Marion, a student of literature, and Jacqueline and Lucia, an opera singer. He has shared love, sex and friendship with all of these women and he still somehow feels close to them. As for the women, they look upon Adam's life with Eva and their two children wistfully, not without some nostalgia and even a little envy. He's living in paradise, one of them tells him. What did he do to deserve it? They -- and some of their relatives -- spend a week together in paradise, conversing, attending the premiere of a new musical composition, planting trees, and altogether reflecting on what they shared of the past and what they might expect from the future. On this earth, after all, paradise is not eternal. |
