NIGHT SHAPES / RENCONTRES NOCTURNES
The Pope is visiting Berlin but for several of the city's inhabitants the night of his stay brings not so much spiritual comfort as mishap and calamity. When homeless Hanna finds 100 Deutschmarks, she and her boyfriend Victor decide to splurge and spend it on a night in a hotel. But this seemingly modest desire ends up taking them on a wild-goose chase across the teeming city and their search for a room turns into a severe test of their relationship. Farmer Jochen comes to town looking for female companionship and meets the streetwise teenage prostitute Patty. Jochen isn't looking for quick sex so Patty offers to spend the whole night with him -- at a price. Jochen's romantic sensibility and his clumsy attempts at affection clash with Patty's sharp sense of business. Bitterly disappointed, Jochen reacts violently when he discovers the real reason for Patty is so keen for his money. Peschke is an aging yuppie wannabe who hides his failed career with a cell phone and feigned industry. Waiting for a female business partner at the airport, he mistakenly accuses a young Angolan boy of having stolen his wallet. To make up for his mistake, Peschke offers to drive the boy to his relatives in town. In the process Peschke loses his car and nearly his mind along with it, but the experience does demonstrate that for all his pretensions Peschke has a caring heart.
