ALMOST NOTHING / PRESQUE RIEN
The film takes place in contemporary Brazil. Not the country of large, modern cities integrated into the modern world, but the rural, anachronistic Brazil with its almost medieval social and economic structure and moral values. ALMOST NOTHING is based on true stories (though inspired by the fiction of Gorky, Borges and the Brazilian writer Guimar�es Rosa), three crimes which never made headlines, involving as they did ordinary people whose lives mean nothing to anyone but themselves. Jo�o, Compadre, Ademir, Idalina, Ernani and Glorinha have families, wives, children and friends. They live in society but are desperately lonely. For them there are no analysts, no priests, no Freud and no Marx. No normal conversations or secrets, just whispered gossip and insinuations. But they have feelings -- love and hatred, resentment and affection, joy and pain. Their difficulty is in expressing themselves. All they have is violence. Through it they expose more than their personal conflicts; they reflect the society in which they live. Brazil is the country of carnival and soccer, the eighth largest economy in the world. But it also has another side, a dark one of poverty and ignorance. And in the middle of it one can sometimes find a bit of dignity...

Sergio Rezende
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1951, Sergio Rezende studied film at a Jesuit school and was active in the film club movement. After three years of law school he quit to become a filmmaker. He directed several short films before founding a production company with Mariza Le�o. His filmography includes: Leila para sempre Diniz (1975), P.S.
