The president of the Georgian Republic, Edward Shevardnadze is a charismatic if somewhat controversial figure. A zealous apparatchik of the Georgian communist system, he was appointed Soviet minister of foreign affairs under Gorbachev and worked for perestroika, disarmament, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan. Denouncing the conservative forces of the regime, he resigned a few months before the putsch in Moscow. Returning to Georgia, he ended the civil war in Abkhazia and brought Georgia into the CIS. This documentary examines the tactics and the metamorphosis a man of power. |
