WATER DROPS ON BURNING ROCKS
Adapted from one of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's early plays (which was never performed in his lifetime), the story is set in 1970s Germany. Lopold, a smug, well-kept 50-year-old businessman, picks up and seduces fresh-faced 19-year-old Franz who quickly moves into Lopold's bachelor's apartment. But their relationship soon sours when mercurial Lopold turns irritable and demanding. Things get stickier when first Franz's blonde girlfriend Anna, then Lopold's former lover Vra (who may or may not have originally been a man), turn up. A haunting return to the themes and concerns of one of the most influential film and theatre directors of the '70s. -- David Stratton (Variety) This delirious, beautifully performed chamber piece is filmed in an impeccable, minimally glossy style evocative of THE BITTER TEARS OF PETRA VON KANT. In Ozon's capable hands, Fassbinder's comically hyperbolized psychosexual mind games still achieve a giddy resonance. -- Dennis Lim (The Village Voice)
