Sam is black, thirtyish and a genuine easterner (i.e., former East German). He lives in Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin. After a strictly by-the-book GDR childhood and adolescence, followed by the usual stint in the army, Sam is determined to make a go of it as a singer. He has tried his hand at a variety of jobs, but none of them have lasted long, and ever since Germany was reunited he's been living largely on welfare. It's always back to singing; he dreams of recording a CD of popular East German songs. That and writing a film script. But getting someone to invest in his dreams isn't easy. His personal life is equally uncertain. Sam is gay and has a crush on Manne, a Belgian construction worker who came to Berlin after the wall fell. Sam's best friend, Bastl, who is also gay, used to be a dancer but is reduced to appearing in small nightclubs and theatres. Sam breaks up with Manne and is shocked to learn Manne has infected him with HIV. Both down on their luck, Sam and Bastl decide to rent an apartment together. Sam meets and falls in love with Rainer, a West German who works as an orderly. The two quarrel in a car one day and have an accident which leaves Rainer blind, but he finds shelter and security by moving in with Sam and Bastl. The domestic situation upsets Bastl, however, and he takes to the bottle. What he really needs is affection and he thinks he's found it in Mike, a painter from England who is in Berlin looking for fame and fortune. The mnage gets a new member... |
