THE FOOLISH POMEGRANATE TREE / LE GRENADIER FOU
About a hundred years ago Nico fell asleep; Vano was standing beside him. Suddenly they began to see the world, yesterday's sorrow here, tomorrow's sadness there, their own solitude trembling in the distance. They saw rocks full of thoughts, rocks full of love, rocks full of happiness and fear and jealousy. And a rock full of empty stones. They grew up and died. They saw the moment behind a branch and the years lying along distant paths. Nico was a branch on a tree and Vano a leaf, falling from the tree, pale and wrinkled. The wind blew them away. They saw a city, a courtyard, a veranda. Beautiful women drifting languidly about, while a group of men, an aged general, a philosopher and an astronomer, exchanged views about life. They saw a photographer and their favourite, foolish, pomegranate tree. And then everything began to move again, to drift off and die again...
