Denmark in 1900. Bente, the oldest of two adult sisters living on the Hamre farm with their father, is forced into an arranged marriage to Gorm, who is only interested in her fortune. Bente has no feelings for Gorm, but she accepts her duty and marries him. When Bente's father dies, to Gorm's great surprise, Bente inherits Hamre. Bente accepts her lot in life and begins to work the farm, driven by loyalty to her father and to the survival of Hamre. Bente's sister Grethe, however, marries for love. She and her husband Martin move into town and Grethe is faced with a completely new way of life which is dominated by Martin's hedonistic and self-centred parents. Back at Hamre, Gorm attempts to dominate Bente and establish himself as landlord and head of the household. But while Bente shows him great respect and tries hard to live with his foibles, she is determined to maintain her rights as the true owner of Hamre. By day, Bente and Gorm live in a state of competition and manipulation; by night the power struggle continues in the bedroom. Gorm begins an affair with the kitchen maid... |

Katrine Wiedemann Born in Denmark in 1969, Katrine Wiedemann found her studies at the National Film School cut short when, without formal training, her success directing for the stage sent her reputation soaring, transforming her into one of the country's most sought-after theatre directors. By the age of 25, she had already some eight stage productions to her credit. THE LADY OF HAMRE marks her film debut. |
