A single mother who keeps a small shop in a provincial town, Mrs. Nielsen is fiercely protective of her autistic son. Brian is not really retarded, just different. But Mrs. Nielsen loves him to the point of suffocation and makes sure that his contact with the normal world is limited and thoroughly controlled. One hot summer night, Brian is late returning from his evening walk. The next morning brings news of a girl murdered in a nearby field. Immediately suspecting her son, Mrs. Nielsen begins destroying potentially incriminating evidence and she coaches him into saying that he was asleep all night if and when the police question him. Jespersen, the veteran police detective assigned to the case, suspects Brian and persists in interrogating the boy again and again. Mrs. Nielsen is tremendously anxious, still not sure whether Brian killed the girl and afraid to ask him. Brian, meanwhile, would dearly love to confide in someone. But his mother won't listen and he's afraid of Jespersen. There's only the Baron, a kindly old man who runs a second-hand shop down the street... |
