LITTLE VILMA: THE LAST DIARY / LA PETITE VILMA: LE DERNIER JOURNAL
The fourth and last of Mrta Mszros' semi-autobiographical diary series, this film recounts the experiences of Vilma (the director's alter ego) in the '30s and '40s when she lived with her parents in Kirgizstan, the Central Asian republic which was at the time part of the Soviet Union. The director's father, a Hungarian sculptor, was one of the many European intellectuals enticed by the Communist political experiment. But like so many of his comrades, he was arrested and executed during the Stalinist purges of 1937-38. Treated like an enemy of the state, little Vilma -- whose mother has died in 1942 -- is taken away to be educated at a Young Soviets school, and she is only allowed to return to Hungary after being adopted by a Spanish revolutionary friend of her parents. Now, grown-up Vilma has come back to the stunningly beautiful Kirgiz landscapes of her childhood. Here she finally gets written proof that her father was shot for allegedly passing secrets to the Germans. Memories flood back, but they are bittersweet.
