At the start of the 21st century, humanity had sunk into a profound crisis, a moral, social and economic crisis which presaged the end of the world... It was work that was the clearest indication of the problem. That was a time when most people still lived off their jobs: they would sell their labour and time to companies in exchange for a salary. Today we might find it hard to imagine the power that this economic dependence conferred onto the companies. It gave them control of people's time.
