BREAKING THE SILENCE / LE SILENCE BRIS
Single mother Sun Liying has a hard lot in life. Her son Zheng Da is deaf and his father divorced Sun Liying largely because of it. Now Sun is obliged to work and to bring up her son alone. Zheng has now reached school age and she practices speaking to him so that he will be able to attend a normal school. She quits her well-paying job and delivers newspapers so that she can spend the rest of the day with her son. She is convinced that he is as good as other children and that wearing a hearing aid is no different than wearing glasses. But the truth is otherwise. Zheng Da fails his entrance test and ends up being teased by the other children for his handicap and beaten up when he tries to defend himself. As well, his hearing aid is smashed during the struggle and Sun Liying can't really afford to buy him a new one. One of the teachers at the school, Fang Zipin, is attracted to Sun Liying and she doesn't reject his overtures. Giving up everything to help her son has made her a lonely woman and even though she is bitterly disappointed in men, she confesses to her girlfriend that she longs for love and affection. But life has toughened her and when a businessman who owes her money tries to rape her, Sun Liying fights him off. She even succeeds in getting her money back and uses it to buy Zheng Da a new hearing aid. But Zheng Da has a mind of his own and Sun Liying is confronted with some painful realities.
