Gabi, 30, a Barcelona writer who is returning to her city after having spent 3 years in Madrid, has come back to accept an award for erotic literature. She lived a fast life in Madrid, ostensibly to gather material for her art, and now rumours abound that she may be getting the award in exchange for personal favours. The gossip begins to haunt Gabi and forces her to seek shelter at the home of her best friend Raquel. She needs to think things out. Gabi tries to enjoy the simple pleasures in life, going out to dinner with her sister Clara, having fun with Raquel. That's when she meets Jalil. a Muslim Indian who works at flower shop near Raquel's place. One day she asks him to keep an eye on her scooter and before they know it they're in love. Gabi's smile and good manners seduce Jalil and for her every moment with Jalil is a fascinating exploration of new emotional territory. Still, enormous gaps remain between them: underneath it all she's a liberal Christian and he's a conservative Muslim. They spend the summer months together until he returns to India on vacation. The problems begin when he returns to Barcelona and makes demands on her behaviour, demands that Gabi is simply not willing to accept. They try negotiating. But it seems that Gabi cannot stop being the way she is and neither can Jalil. Is this impasse permanent? |
