ON THE BEACH BEYOND THE PIER / SUR LA PLAGE DERRIRE LA JETE
In seaside Viareggio in the '20s, Andrea, Guido and Nives are close friends despite their very different characters. Pharmacist's son Andrea yearns to be a poet, Guido is a gifted pianist but is expected to continue the family seafaring business, and Nives is the girl who loves them both. Andrea becomes a doctor, Guido becomes a musician and Nives ends up marrying him even though she retains a strong affection for Andrea, and he an even stronger one for her. The three friends look forward to a happy future, but war breaks out and their destinies begin to diverge. Andrea throws in his lot with the partisans while Guido allows himself to be seduced by fascism. When the Nazis retreat from Tuscany in 1944, Guido is arrested for collaborating with the Nazis and Nives calls on their old friend to save him from execution. Andrea does so by giving him refuge in the psychiatric clinic where he works. He nurses Guido back to health and arranges for him to flee to England with Nives. Many years later the three friends will meet again when Andrea gets a prestigious literary award in their old hometown. Guido's musical career has flourished and Nives is still torn by her love of the two men...
