THE SHIPYARD / LE CHANTIER
Santa Mar�a, a melancholy town on the River Plate in the 1950s. Larsen, a hot-headed pimp driven out of town five years earlier for attempting to open a brothel, is back, determined to get revenge and vindication. Women, whom he knows well from professional experience, will be the instrument of his retribution. He begins by seducing the young daughter of Jeremias Petrus, a prominent industrialist, owner of the local shipyard now shut down because of a lawsuit. Petrus lives in isolation in a large mansion but Larsen manages to get to meet him. Petrus is trying to recruit new investors to save his shipyard, which he hopes will also revivify the town. Petrus puts Larsen in command of the shipyard and Larsen sees it as an opportunity to show his worth and get back at his detractors. The yard is managed by Galvez, who ekes out a living selling spare parts. Larsen seduces Galvez's wife and Galvez retaliates by threatening to expose Petrus' implication in another man's death. Slowly Larsen begins to uncover the secrets hidden in the desolate landscape of the shipyard.

David Lipszyc
Argentinian director David Lipszyc made his debut in 1978 with El coraz�n delator. His first feature, THE RETURN (1982), won prizes in several international festivals and was voted best first film by the Argentine Film Critics' Association. LA ROSALES (1984) was shown in festivals on both sides of the Atlantic. |
