WATCH THE SKY / REGARDE LE CIEL
The situation of women's lives in three different periods of the 20th century. For each of the three protagonists, the problem is the same: how to maintain a balance between work and private life -- family, husband, boyfriend. Stella lives in the country in the '40s. She is 28, has a husband and three small children. She works hard in order to buy some land to farm, but one pregnancy after another have hindered the realization of her dream. Sonia is a student in Milan in the '70s. A scholarship to a school in Rome and the consequent necessity of postponing her wedding, become sources of tension with her boyfriend. Silvia is a switchboard operator at a small mail order company in the '90s. Her husband is the head of another department at the same firm. They have differences over union and employment issues at the company and these differences spill over into their private life.

Piergiorgio Gay
Born in Turin, Italy in 1959, Piergiorgio Gay was one of the first members of the Ipotesi Cinema group founded by Ermanno Olmi in 1982, and he assisted Olmi on several films and operas in the '80s and '90s. He made his own directorial debut in 1983 with The Hidden Face of the Moon, a short documentary for the RAI network. Also directed for RAI was his first feature, THREE STORIES (1997). His filmography includes: Last Concert (1984) and False Evidence (1999). In 1998 he directed a production of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor for opera houses in Bergamo, Brescia and Cremona. |
