THE PRISONERS OF BU�UEL / LES PRISONNIERS DE BU�UEL
Las Hurdes is the region in Western Spain which was the subject of a powerful documentary by Luis Bu�uel in 1932, LAND WITHOUT BREAD. In it Bu�uel portrayed the area as a hell on earth, a land of starvation, disease, dwarves, insane and prematurely-aged women. A land forsaken by God. Ostensibly an objective study of the area, the film constituted such a militant critique of both church and state that it was banned in Spain for many years. More than sixty years later, a curse still hangs over the place, not inconsequentially because of Bu�uel's film. A small film crew returns to Las Hurdes in 1999 with a screen and a copy of Bu�uel's film, which they show in a local square. The villagers respond. They tell wonderful stories and often react fiercely to the film. This forms the backdrop for a new picture of the local inhabitants. Have the filmmakers come to do the same as Bu�uel or will they be recording what they see with an unbiased point of view?

Ram�n Gieling
Born in 1954, Ram�n Gieling trained as an artist. He founded the magazine Wolfsmond in 1967 for writers, filmmakers and composers. Since 1978 Gieling, who is also a stage director, has made a wide variety of short, medium and feature-length documentaries.
