In a turn-of-the-century Icelandic village, the stormy relationship between two sisters is fed by clashing domestic values and sibling envy and soon threatens the probity of their household. As the daughters of the respected, landowning village deacon, Thurid and her younger sister Rannveig are expected to uphold long-practiced traditions, in accordance with the clan's esteemed standing -- which includes wedding a man of equal or higher status. But Rannveig has no interest in pursuing this aim -- she would much rather attend a handicrafts school and find work full-time as a knitter. The already-married Thurid is outraged by her sister's declaration, which she is sure will bring public humiliation to the family. Ultimately, she reluctantly agrees with the family's decision to send Rannveig off to pursue her education, but is instantly thrown into a jealous rage when she discovers that Rannveig will be attending school in Copenhagen and staying with her onetime paramour, the roguish actor Viggo and his wife. When Rannveig returns to Iceland pregnant with Viggo's child, it sets off a chain of events that leads to estrangement between the sisters and the family's full-fledged defence of what it considers to be an inviolable code of conduct. |
