Upon the death of his mother, Joseph is sent by his father to a boarding school. Saddened, he leaves Magan, his best friend, and the village of his childhood to lead a new life elsewhere. His new home is run by strict but caring Catholic missionaries. Little by little, but not without incident, Joseph learns to love and be loved by the people of the school, his new family. He is particularly fond of Tom Chacha, en ex-soldier, or so he says, who now works as a cook. Joseph loves to listen to the war stories Tom tells him as he prepares the Father's meals. He also wins the friendship of his class comrades-- the facetious Karsan and Arvin who is hopelessly in love with his beautiful literature teacher. It is in this boarding house on the shore of the Indian Ocean that, during recess, he has an encounter that changes his life forever. The encounter is with Sandu, a teenager living in abject poverty. For the first time in his life, Joseph witnesses true misery. Revolted by this injustice, he decides to help his new-found friend. Every day little Joseph borrows bread from the school's kitchen and gives it to Sandu and his impoverished family. Until the day he gets caught red-handed. Twenty years later Joseph and Sandu meet by chance in a remote train station. Joseph has grown up to be a notorious writer and Sandu a train engineer. Once again bread becomes a symbol of their relationship... |
