Based on the life of the director's mother, writer Gisela Elsner, who committed suicide in 1992 at the age of 56, this is a chronicle of the last 2 years in the life of Hanna Flanders, who was one of the brightest literary stars of the '60s but never managed to live up to the promise of her early success. In the '60s and '70s Hanna was a leading writer of the German hippie movement, the so-called 68ers, and a darling of Munich's chic literary scene. Daughter of an upper middle class family whose cheques she was happy to cash even when she was criticizing their bourgeois society, Hanna's star faded along with the movement she championed. Now, as her writing falters, she descends deeper into a private, self-pitying world of pills and alcohol. A longtime admirer of East Germany and communism, she is appalled to see the celebrations surrounding the fall of the Berlin Wall. She travels to Berlin from her home in Munich to seek out friendship and work but all she gets is rebuffs, some less polite than others. An editor friend lends her an apartment in a seedy Eastern Berlin project but, shocked by the easterners' dismissal of their former society and their new enthusiasm for Western-style consumerism, she returns to Munich thoroughly crushed by the apparent collapse of her political and social paradise. This is not what she wrote for, this is not what she lived for... |
