This rivetting political thriller tells the story of a man who was once called the most powerful Italian since Julius Caesar. Immediately after World War II, Enrico Mattei was appointed head of AGIP, the Italian national oil company set up under the Fascist regime. He was supposed to oversee its dissolution but, instead, after finding a report indicating the existence of important reserves, Mattei decided to keep the company alive. The discovery of methane gas allowed AGIP to supply low-cost energy to industry and Mattei to create a power centre at the service of the Italian state. When he extended AGIP's interests to foreign countries, however, Mattei began to run afoul of existing companies and international alliances. As for AGIP in Italy, it is thought that he maintained its monopoly and insulated it from government interference through the application of generous bribes. When he died in a plane crash under ambiguous circumstances in 1962, suspicions were aroused. Like Caesar, Mattei did not lack for enemies, neither abroad nor at home.
