In a southern Italian city someone murders a well-known judge. The murder turns out to be the first in a series of murders, and all the victims are judges. Inspector Rogas is dispatched from Rome to investigate. He rejects the hypothesis that the crimes are the work of a Mafia vendetta or a mad criminal. He narrows his suspicions to a pharmacist who had been unfairly convicted of a poisoning years earlier and has now disappeared. But when Rogas reports his findings to his superiors, they reject his conclusion and direct his investigation towards left-wing extremists. But Rogas is convinced that in fact the subsequent killings are being committed by right-wing conspirators seeking to destabilize the government. When he makes an appointment to tell what he knows to a communist official, he himself becomes the target of the conspirators. The entire story is shot through with a terrific sense of menace; corruption is rampant and the paranoia thoroughly justified. |
