With or without a friend / In S�o Paulo I feel my best / We the peasants half-caste / Travel far from the Nordeste / Tho' S�o Paulo steals your shirt / You can rise out of the dirt -- The rhythms and rhymes of the cantadores, the troubadours of Brazil's Northeast, set the tempo of S�o Paulo. Journalist or simple maidservant, construction worker or art gallery director, the immigrants from the Northeast bring their own beat to one of the five biggest cities of the world. This is a look at how in S�o Paulo the traditional culture of Brazil's Northeast is about to become the urban culture of the future.
Teeming with people, crowded with characters, this film is a polyphonic work of baroque inspiration, which attempts to paint a portrait of a city: the southern megalopolis, Brazil's industrious Mecca to which all the destitute of the Northeast are drawn. -- Marie-H�l�ne Martin (Lib�ration)
The richest aspect of Brazilian culture is its music. So I decided to do a portrait of S�o Paulo via those who built it, the Northeasterners, who possess a powerful oral tradition, full of improvised songs and poems which are sung and recited in the parks, in the city squares. -- Cesar Paes

Cesar Paes
Born in Campos, Brazil in 1955, Cesar Paes has lived and worked in Paris since 1980. He has specialized in ethnographic documentaries shot (in partnership with his wife, filmmaker Marie-Cl�mence Blanc) in third world countries. His filmography includes: ANGANO... ANGANO...
