It's winter in Winnipeg, snowy and minus thirty. Steven, alias Pretty Boy, is released from Stony Mountain Prison after serving three years. His older and slightly crazier brother Christian, alias Spinner, picks him up outside and tells him about one last job that he's planned. He's been watching a courier who regularly delivers packages from a diamond dealer to jewelers in downtown Winnipeg. Pretty Boy served three years for armed robbery so he's not having anything to do with guns. Spinner compromises: no guns. They beat up the courier with hockey sticks and come away with an envelope containing 25 diamonds. They jump into their car and drive north out of town. Also heading in that direction is Kirsten, who has decided to go to a friend's isolated cabin in the Gimli-Interlake area to cure herself of writer's block. Kirsten is stopped at a small gas station when who should pull up but the two brothers. When an RCMP patrol car drives up as well, Pretty Boy panics and decides to ditch the package and their handgun; he throws them into the back of Kirsten's pickup truck. While the Mountie searches the brothers' car, Kirsten drives away. All the brothers have to do now is find the girl and her truck. They know that she's headed to a cabin by a lake. But this is the Interlake district, land of a thousand lakes!
