For the first time in their lives, first graders enter a large social environment called school. They will also be away from home for longer periods than they ever were. The children's response to the new social milieu varies greatly from one individual to another. Some react by breaking school rules. One after another, the first-grade troublemakers hit with name-calling and fighting raps are brought in to face the principal. The rituals of grilling, confessing and repenting, with predictable variations, begin anew. Alternately poignant and comic real-life documentary footage is give an extra edge when intercut with an even more highly ritualized moment -- the fifteen minutes of morning gymnastics.
