CORONATION / COURONNEMENT
In Santiago's once wealthy west side, in an old mansion that has seen better days, Estela, a peasant girl, comes to look after Do�a Elisa de Abalos, the former grande dame of the household. At 97, now suffering from advanced senility, Do�a Elisa nonetheless manages to shock and pain listeners with her memories of the past and her acute observations of her grandson's growing obsession with the youthful and naive Estela. A bookish, withdrawn man of fifty, Andr�s is helpless before the charms of the young woman, who soon becomes pregnant with the child of Mario, a young man of little means. While Andr�s battles to retain control of his rage and frustration upon learning of Estela's pregnancy, Mario's brother easily convinces Mario to use his power over Estela to break in and rob the Abalos home. While the household's last surviving servants prepare an elegant cocktail no one will attend, and dress Do�a Elisa up in her once regal costumes, Mario convinces Estela that she should entice a drunken Andr�s to a remote corner of the house. Estela tries to oblige her lover, but, unable to bear Andr�s' embrace, suddenly throws open the shutters of the room where he is accosting her, to reveal a robbery in progress. The neat little scheme that Mario's brother devised is about to unravel, with far-reaching consequences for everyone involved.

Silvio Caiozzi
Born in Chile in 1944, Silvio Caiozzi took a degree in communications at Columbia College in Chicago. He has worked as cinematographer on a dozen features including Raul Ru�z's WHITE DOVE (1973) and Costa-Gavras' STATE OF SIEGE (1973). He has produced and directed films, television programs and over 300 commercials. His features include: A LA SOMBRA DEL SOL (co-directed, 1974), JULIO COMIENZA EN JULIO (1979), LA LUNA EN EL ESPEJO (1990) and FERNANDO HA VUELTO (1998). |
