Akira and Koichi, two 10-year-olds, are two troublemakers at school, constantly encouraging each other in their misbehaviour. Attracted by their notoriety is Akira's classmate Kinoshita, and the trio soon get into a fight with a group of junior high schoolers. They lose the fight but have a good laugh about it. One day at the park, Akira and Kinoshita run into Nomura, another classmate. Nomura is a shy kid whom no one notices at school. They accompany Nomura home and are surprised to discover that Nomura has a remarkable talent for building models from kits. The models are of World War II tanks and Akira is amazed by their quality; he is astonished to find a true talent among his schoolmates. Their relationship grows. Nomura invites Akira to his birthday party. When Akira declines at the last minute, Nomura visits Akira and brings him the plastic model he had intended to give him at the party. In return, Akira shows Nomura how to stick firecrackers in paper airplanes and, along the way, catches the attention of Tamayo, the girl in the neighbouring house. But this idyllic childhood is not meant to last. Abrupt changes are just beyond the horizon... Although there are moments of boisterousness, the overall effect of DON'T LOOK BACK is quiet and contemplative. It may remind you of Franois Truffaut's SMALL CHANGE in the way it clearly accepts childhood on its own level. -- Burl Burlingame (Honolulu Star-Bulletin) |
