SUR QUEL PIED DANSER ?   Films for Television
France
1999 / 35 mm / Color / 92 min.

One well-ordered life upsets another. Jeanne, a thirty-five-year-old woman, and Julien, a homeless fifteen-year-old. A strange encounter. She thought she had a quiet life, but everything suddenly falls apart. He has survived for years, on his own, scrounging an existence out of misery, without any lifelines, without any social safety nets. She will take care of him, now. Awkwardly, with all the ambiguities that the relationship entails. Despite his mistrust, bit by bit, he allows himself to be cared for. A strange relationship. They go a lot farther, together, than they could ever have imagined. I wanted to make a film about two worlds which only see each other intermittently -- that of Jeanne, where one lives with guidelines, morality, ideals, but which is totally disconnected from a part of reality, and that of a street urchin who glides over pitfalls like a bar of soap... I chose not to explain Jeanne's actions. Is it just her conscience? The frustration of a childless woman? A sexual infatuation? I don't have to know. -- Jacques Fansten
