Early one morning in the summer of 1999, and almost a week before her wedding day, Jo�o realizes that she doesn't want to get married after all. The preparations are well under way, the invitations have been sent out long ago and to top it all Jo�o thinks she's pregnant. Faced with this dilemma, she does what she always does when she needs time to think -- she drinks. In all other respects, Jo�o is a good girl, polite, disciplined and a good student despite having been somewhat neglected. Her mother died five years ago and her brothers have left home. Afonso, the eldest, when he got married, and Jos� Maria, the younger one, who's not the marrying type, because he didn't get along with his father. The father is Dr. Jo�o Jos�, a vet with political ambitions, who has little time for his daughter. But worst of all is that their great uncle Nini, who made such a difference to their childhood, is now dying. When Jo�o drinks, things tend to happen quickly, and not always for the best. So she does what she always does when things are going badly: she runs to Gabriel, the family friend, the poor relation of Dr. Jo�o Jos�, who finds it hard to say no.

Jos� �lvaro Morais
Born in Coimbra, Portugal, in 1945, Jos� �lvaro Morais enrolled in the Lisbon Medical College but chose film over medical studies and graduated in direction from the Institut Sup�rieur des Arts du Spectacle in Brussels. He returned to Portugal in 1974. His filmography includes: CANTIGAMENTE N� 3 (1975), MA FEMME CHAMADA BICHO (1976), O BOBO (1987) and Z�firo (1994). |
