REGARDING BUUEL / PROPOS DE BUUEL
At once brilliant and enigmatic, aggressive and shy, Luis Buuel was one of the most important artists of the 20th century. He rubbed shoulders with many of his era's creative geniuses. He helped Picasso hang Guernica. He was thrown off a Hollywood set by Greta Garbo. He attended orgies organized by Charlie Chaplin. He saw Cocteau smoke opium. He tried to strangle Gala, wife of Paul luard, who later went to live with Dal. He planned to shoot a pornographic film with Marcel Duchamp and Fernand Lger and got furious when Federico Garca Lorca tried to seduce his friend and collaborator Salvador Dal. His film career spanned half a century, from the seminal Andalusian Dog in 1929 to THAT OBSCURE OBJECT OF DESIRE in 1977, a body of work that continues to be among the most remarkable in the entire history of the seventh art. The richness of Buuel's films and their characters derives from the conflict between the human and the divine, between desire and its shadows, between liberty and its phantoms. REGARDING BUUEL attempts to show not only the man who supported the anarchists during the Spanish Civil War and the staunchly anti-clerical leftist who provoked the Vatican with VIRIDIANA, but also the strange Spaniard, traditional and jealous, hopelessly addicted to alcohol and firearms. To make their documentary, the directors enlisted the help of family, friends and colleagues of Buuel in Hollywood, New York, France, Spain and Mexico. REGARDING BUUEL includes original interviews, unpublished files, letters and recordings, as well as excerpts from his films.
