THE ISLAND / L'LE NUE
A farmer, his wife and their two boys are the only inhabitants of a small, barren island. The family's chief daily chore consists in getting water for themselves and for their crops. Each day they must row a long distance to the mainland, trudge inland to a stream, carry yokes of buckets to the boat, row back to their island, labour up a steep hill to their field and carefully dole out the water by the cupful on their plants. This quest for water sets the rhythm for the film, whose story is told entirely with dialogue. A big fish is caught, a bucket spills, a son dies. One must accept what life offers and carry on.
