MOST PROMISING YOUNG ACTRESS
Fortyish Yvon Rance is and has always been a hairdresser. That is his vocation. He is elegant, his hairpiece fits well and in his native Breton town of Cancale, he reigns over a small court of aging women whose loyalties he has secured with large amounts of silver highlighter. But his true masterpiece, the apple of his eye, is his only daughter Laetitia, whom he has raised on his own for nearly 18 years. He dreams of a spectacular future for Laetitia -- coiffeuse in a bigger city like Laval or Quimper, a hairdresser for the third millennium. Everything seems arranged. Until Yvon discovers that Laetitia has her own ambitions and they don't include dressing hair. In fact Laetitia has secretly been going to movie auditions and she has just been selected for the lead role in a film. Yvon's world crumbles. This is a catastrophe... When I was a teenager, I had a somewhat complicated relationship with my father, especially when I told him that I wanted to work in the movies. But my film is not -- at least not entirely -- a film about the cinema. The subject is above all about the miscommunication between a father and his son or daughter, during adolescence. It is the father's sudden realization that his little girl is becoming a woman and is rejecting the life that he has prepared for her. -- Grard Jugnot
