In Kurdistan, somewhere in Mesopotamia, Dolovan and Zara want nothing more than to escape to a better life. Their goal is Paris, land of Piaf and Cousteau, far from the violence and oppression they have known all their lives. But Zara's money and Dolovan's dreams are not enough. They must wait in the Winter Palace, an urban sanctuary in Armenia for refugees destined for the West. When they finally make it to the train that will get them to a boat for Italy, they are separated by circumstances and one of their Winter Place acquaintances. Reaching Italy, Dolovan is indentured to a Venetian trafficker in order to get Zara to safety. Armenia, Ukraine, Italy, France: they are determined to get to Paris. But will the cost be too high? There is a Kurdistan in Iraq, there is a Kurdistan in Turkey, there is a Kurdistan in Iran and there is a Kurdistan in Syria. But there is no Kurdistan that is Kurd. So I made my film across the border, in Armenia. Everything was familiar, the mountains, the faces, the spaces; without the Kurdish community in Armenia I could not have made this film. -- Hiner Saleem |
