Like most large European cities, the suburbs of Stockholm are home to immigrants of various cultural and ethnic backgrounds. The young people of this community are confronted with a society that is suspicious of their presence, considering them social outcasts. There is a clear division between us and them. Partly for self-protection, partly because other avenues are blocked, the foreign youth find themselves drawn into gangs and they end up in lives dominated by drugs and crime. BASTARDS IN PARADISE follows the story of one such youth, Manuel, from childhood through to adolescence and young adulthood, and examines his relationships with his family, his friends and with society at large. The story is told in two parts divided by a shooting incident in central Stockholm. This incident leads to an accidental meeting between Manuel and his old girlfriend Lena, now a policewoman, and with his best friend Kalle, now a nightclub doorman. It is a meeting that will change their lives. |
