HOUSEBOUND
United States
1999 / 35 mm / Color / 103 min.

A year has passed but Marie is still traumatized by the vicious rape she suffered at gunpoint late one night. She used to be an outgoing young woman, but now she refuses to leave her house, and has had to quit law school and support herself with in-home typing assignments. For additional income, she takes in a boarder, Tom, who works as a cook on an oil rig. Initially, Marie finds Tom's behaviour a bit odd and unsettling. Though polite and unobtrusive, he has a habit of bolting the kitchen door whenever he cooks, he installs a lock on his closet door and he returns home from weeks at sea with large, bulky black bags which he immediately stores in his closet. Still, Marie is drawn to Tom and he returns her interest. When Marie's boyfriend Jarrid gets fed up with her agoraphobia and breaks off their relationship, Marie forms a new one with Tom. Though there is clearly something mysterious about him, Tom exudes a quiet sensuality and he gently teaches her how to handle her anxiety attacks. Before long they are having candlelit dinners together. Do you trust me? he asks. I do, she replies. But she soon begins to have doubts when she catches Tom kissing Mignon, her flirtatious sister who has come to stay at Marie's house since she broke up with her own boyfriend. Tension builds and so does Marie's paranoia...
