HIS WIFE'S DIARY / LE JOURNAL INTIME DE SA FEMME
In October of this year, Russian and international literature lovers will be celebrating the 130th anniversary of the birth of the great poet and novelist Ivan Bunin. The first Russian writer to win the Nobel Prize, Bunin is considered one of the most important figures in Russian literature before the Revolution of 1917, his restrained classical style having a closer kinship with the prose of the 19th century than with the modernist experiments of his own time. This film reveals the private side of Bunin's life. Living in exile in France, concerned with the fate of his homeland during the cataclysmic events of World War II, Bunin can't find peace in his own family. An intricate love story involving his wife Vera, the young poetess Galina Plotnikova, and opera singer Marga Kovtun for whom Galina leaves Bunin, HIS WIFE'S DIARY describes a psychologically complex man whose character belies the popular, banal portrait of Bunin as a serene creator. The action of the story travels across France, Sweden and Germany of the 1930s to 1950s, but is largely set in the south of France, where Bunin and his family had settled.
