A personal betrayal causes Josef Omgang to leave a seemingly successful life as a young attorney in Oslo. Drifting between dream and reality, he returns to his childhood home of Korshavn, a fishing village he hasn't seen for years. Through meetings with his mother, Tatjana -- of whom he has only vague recollections -- her modern counterpart Doris, and Anna the messenger, his journey also becomes the journey into his own frozen and crippled inner self. Reaching home, he finds a village in financial ruin, which corresponds to his own -- and his family's -- personal crisis. Reluctantly, and driven by impulses he hardly understands himself, he is forced into a seemingly ambiguous conflict -- until he is confronted with a final choice: only if the past -- represented by his father -- is destroyed, can a new age begin, both for his home village and for himself. Caught in the paralyzing embrace of the far north, the characters in PASSING DARKNESS writhe and remember in a difficult but fascinating brew of obsession, murder, sex, money, family guilt and postwar politics. -- Deborah Young (Variety) |
